Empowering Girls, Transforming Futures
Build A Girl
Trauma‑informed support and real opportunities for girls at risk of exploitation
Our Vision & Mission
Our Vision
Girls and young women are empowered to build a unique sense of self enabling safe choices and healthy relationships.
Our Mission
To provide survivor-led early intervention to girls and young women at risk of or experiencing child sexual exploitation and other forms of abuse.
Why we exist
Build A Girl was established by Fiona Broadfoot to provide a survivor-led, trauma-informed service for girls and young women in the Bradford area who have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing, domestic violence, sexual exploitation or other forms of abuse.
Girls who have experienced such abuse are at increased risk of ending up in the criminal justice system and commercial sexual exploitation, and generally face limited life opportunities.
What we do
At Build A Girl, we offer a safe, welcoming, non-judgemental environment where girls can begin to discover a positive sense of self and rebuild agency, allowing them to become the girl they want to be. We help the girls to make safe choices in life and establish healthy relationships.
The majority of the girls we support come from deprived socio-economic backgrounds in some of Bradford’s poorest areas. Almost all are from single-parent families where mothers have themselves suffered abuse and receive very little support.
Build A Girl delivers its services through three core activities:
Group Sessions
Weekly group sessions in which girls and young women can engage in creative activities in an emotionally and physically safe environment, and a programme of school holiday activities.
One to One Support
One-to-one trauma informed sessions to help the girls navigate the emotional burden of abuse, including support with issues at school and in the justice system.
Education and Awareness
Delivering talks, training and workshops to wider organisations to raise awareness of violence against women and girls and how a trauma-informed approach can help victims and survivors.
